What is a veterinary technician?

Registered Veterinary Technicians are highly educated and trained professionals working as membersof the veterinary healthcare team.  Their education provides them with the theory and practical skills essential to deliver a gold standard of veterinary care.  Some areas of their expertise include: 

  • Performing and processing diagnostic x-rays
  • Collecting samples and performing diagnostic laboratory tests for the purposes of hematology, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis, and fecal testing.
  • Emergency and first aid
  • Administration and dispensing of medications and treatments as prescribed by the attending veterinarian
  • Anaesthetic administration and monitoring
  • Nutrition management 
  • Animal behaviour and welfare
  • Professional practice administration, management and client relations
  • Public education
  • Providing optimum housing, husbandry, restraint and handling
  • Sanitation, sterilization and disinfection controls and procedures
  • In depth knowledge of dental structures, conditions and lesions, causes and stages of diseases
  • Surgical preparation and assistance
  • Microbiology, immunology, bacteriology, parasitology, and virology
